Drywall CSI Division: 092900 | Residential Category: Drywall
Drywall is a low-cost product with a core of gypsum surrounded by kraft paper facings on both sides.
What Makes It A Green Product
- Look for drywall made with 100% recycled, unbleached paper facings.
- Paperless drywall is available.
- Some drywall is made using synthetic or flue-gas gypsum, a waste product generated by utility companies.
- Drywall can contain 75% or greater recycled content, including at least 10% post-consumer recycled content.
- "Synthetic" drywall, produced from coal combustion by-products, which has the same purity standards as natural gypsum, is readily available.
Negative Environmental Considerations
- The mining of raw gypsum creates habitat disruption.
- The processing and shipping of drywall has negative environmental consequences because of the energy used and emissions from transport.
- Drywall should be recycled at the end of its life to divert solid waste from landfills.
